Fieldtrip to Mammoth Lakes

On the first weekend of May, my petrology class took a field trip to the Mono Lake area (Mammoth Lakes, CA, specifically) to look at some of the geology there (we saw a lot of the Bishop Tuff).

Columnar rhyolite at Owens Gorge. Rhyolite isn’t often seen columnar, and this formation actually indicates a previous fumerole (i.e., steam vent) at the middle of the “wine glass” shape.

Convict Lake; sort of a stereotypically beautiful mountain lake. Apparently a granola bar commerical was filmed here.
